Community Projects
At least once a year, typically in the fall, a Hands For Humanity team travels to Portoviejo, Ecuador, to serve the local community. Community members are involved in the project from the beginning; an integral part of the program is designing projects that serve the children and families and are sustainable by the local community. With direction and help from community members, volunteers may work on a new building project, apply a fresh coat of paint and/or teach a class or lesson to children or adults.
Most recently, our main projects for volunteers have been at the local orphanage, Hogar De Belen. Children live at the orphanage due to families either unable to care for them or because they were abandoned. The children love spending time with volunteers and volunteers find the experience extremely rewarding.
About the orphanage:
Other community projects have included working in local schools, the Foundation for the Blind, daycares, and a children’s lunch program. Hands For Humanity has also supported disaster relief missions as well as groceries for families during the holidays.
